How do I know the color will be correct?

Color in general is very subjective. Method of print, paper color, how a file is set-up, room lighting and an individual’s eye all impact the how the print looks.

So how do you know what is correct?

The answer is that the color that comes off of a properly calibrated press IS the correct color based on all the factors mentioned above. When the print color is not what the customer expected then the question moves to “How do we change the color to make it look more like what I want.”

Example of a bad PMS color:

Color is Pantone 302 converted to CMYK for digital printing.  On screen looks like a dark navy blue. Printed looks purple. Pantone books shows that the color conversion of that color will be purple.  Solution: Pick a different PMS or change the CMYK values to a generic navy. Note that color will not match the original 302 but will no longer be purple.
